Ok, with #1 throwing some for a loop (What, Peter praising a goldwing? what is this madness)

Time to return to regular programming.

Kinja'd!!!

#2 on our list is a full bore, 200HP, balls to the walls liter bike. WITH the added condition: you have somewhere to really open it up.

There is no specific bike this time, any of the bike 1000ccs will do it. My point is: To ride on of these things and to let it breath, and i mean REALLY breathe...will reset your expectations of fast.

AS an example, the above video is a 2007 (12 years old!) GSXr-1000. Starting his run at 0.32 on the video, in 10 seconds he hits 145 mph. in 10 seconds. in 15? he is doing 173 MPH.

The sheer relentlessness and power is something that I think everyone MUST experiance. Much like the goldwing has its thing with comfort and stability, the power and speed and sheer “Oh my free-wheeling christ” is something to be felt.

My experiance? I had a zx-10R for a few nights. And on one of the highways near my house, they were doing some construction just north of where me and a friend met up for a ride that night. As we were chilling in the carpool parking lot and chatting, a MTO truck comes up and tell us: hey, we are closing the highway for a few KM for work...you boy want to have it to yourself for a pass or two?

... erm....no need to invite us twice.

So, we had 3Km of 3 lane wide, freshly paved blacktop to our disposal. and let me tell you, I let that bike do its thing. And it re-set some standards. To this day, i can still feel the freight-train like relentlessness of that thing.

Tune in tomorrow to see what else I think all two wheeled enhusiasts should try!

Oh man. Chillest construction worker of all time.

I'm digging these posts. Maybe I'll get to a liter bike someday

Yep, I’ve had my NT650 for like 3 months and I already want to try something faster. (Not that I don’t absolutely love my bike).

I’m a horrible bike person

I rode a 2007 GSX-R1000 with a Yoshimura pipe and a Dynojet Power Commander. I was on it for about 5 miles of secondary roads in cent ral Vermont , and after a I cleaned the copious shit out of my pants I told my friend who owned it that I would NEVER do that again, and I didn’t.

Addendum: If you’ve never ridden one before, don’t give it full throttle till 2nd or even 3rd gear, and when you do, hang on for dear life.

I have a liter-bike!....That only makes as much power as a 600 sportbike......But it counts, right?

(note - I took the trophy out for a run to test my new turn signals and mirrors and one of the carbs started leaking. SO. BRITISH.)

I’m too old to be that reckless, well aware of my own mortality . by me that would be exactly when a deer (or several) would bound out into the road. and my shoulders are too old to tolerate sport bike riding position.

When I bought a 600rr years ago I thought I would eventually move up to a liter bike. After riding my bike for a bit, I had no further need for more acceleration. 150 mph in a car is very fast. 150 on a bike is life altering fast. 200 or so on a bike, I can only imagine.

Meanwhile, here’s Peter who’s only experience on a Supermoto was a DRZ :p

I agree with both suggestions so far, my F ireblade redefined my whole definition of fast.  T otally worth the experience, yet I don’t miss it even a little.

My roomm ate brought home an 07 GSXR 1000 after buying it and asked if I’d like to have a go with it, mind you coming from a Ninja 1000 at the time. Took the turn out of my neighborhood, gave it some throttle and put the front wheel in the fucking stratosphere, bumped it into 2nd trying to get it down, didn’t come off the throttle so it stayed up, bumped it into third, finally got the front end down, up to fourth, looked at the speedo as it hit 140.

Braked hard to bring it to a stop, turned around, brought it back, and didn’t touch it for a solid year.

I’ve really opened up two separate literbikes, both in the same kind of conditions where I came up over a hill to see a perfectly empty road, guardrails on both sides, and visibility for a few miles.

First time was my Ninja 1000, top of 6th read double the speed limit anywhere in America.

Second time was my roommates GSXR 1000, I did not reach the top of 6th, I was going about 15mph faster than on the Ninja, I chickened out.

600CC is a LOT of bike to start with.

a bike has nothing in coming with a car in terms of handling, power delivery , controls or driving dynamics.

start small (500 and smaller..or maybe a 650/700 twin) and go from there

you know...I wouldnt say a supermoto is a MUST ride. Its fun sure. But i’ve ridden more then a few (the DRZ, had a 690 enduro supermotod for a day)

fun...but not something that i think everyone should experience , because you need a certain skill/mindset to really enjoy it.

that the thing. this kind of stuff is best done on a closed, guarded course. say, a airstrip or something.

do it once, cross it off the list, never do it again.

I have ridden 250cc bikes a decent amount. Just not lately. So, I want a larger capacity bike

I disagree. much like you laid out for the literbike, it’s something that needs to be enjoyed in a certain setting. If you don’t think it’s a must, you haven’t done it in the right setting yet.

That setting is tight, like gokart track tight, non flowing  corners. In that setting the supermoto is perfection. Being 100lbs down on a sportbike only really come into it’s own when the corners are close enough and slow enough that the mass transition speed becomes the limiting factor.

I’ve never ridden a bike capable of going that fast. I did, however, take my 650 Turbo to terminal speed - about 135 mph. That’s about as fast as I’d want to go on two wheels.

I’m getting to something similar...arguable you could use a SM for it..but i’m thinking more like set up 250 or something.

its mroe the acceleration at that 120~ mph thats mind-numbing. as hard as my 675 pulls at 60, the 1k pulls JUST as brutally at 120.

isnt it just intoxicating? My Z1000 was the same motor/platform as your ninja, and I though it was quick..but after riding a proper 1000, it felt so blah

this is true. hell, even the zx-10r I had was fighting with the wheelie control to keep the front wheel on the deck at the top of 3rd.

Yeah you want to keep your body mass as far down and forward as possible to keep the front end on the ground. My FJR only wants to pick up the front in first, but it’s still terrifying and exciting all at the same time. Kinda like the first time you have sex, now that I think about it.

I finally got to experience a big bore rocket this year. It absolutely reset my perspective. Bike was a new Aprilia RSV4 RR Factory. I go to ride it on track at an Aprilia event. Scary fast, and would still pull wheelies even with all the electrics on.

While it made everyone feel like a god on the track, almost everyone who rode it had zero interest in ever taking one on the street.

Since my roomm ate and I kinda live together, we get to ride each others bike s whenever, though I do usually prefer the Ninja, the GSXR is just something else. When I got the Ninja maxed out, I looked over to see my roomm ate shift into 6th, and keep going.
